Qualifications for AA Intergroup Service

One day quite by accident,

I read a cute (unapproved, :) ) quote on the wall of an AA meeting room in a church basement many years ago.

It said that “85% of accomplishments were completed by folks that were not qualified for the job!”

That quote had been the motivator of a lot of my positive actions for many years now .

I also heard a statistic somewhere that “inadequacy” is the prevalent feeling experienced by recovering individuals. I related to that feeling, so the quote gave me some impetus to begin tasks and involvements that I felt under qualified for. I also used a 3 part method that I learned about in a good business practices seminar.

  • Like anything, before something gets done, it needs to have an achievable goal. That is, some action or event that is possible to accomplish.
  • Secondly, this action requires an adequate support group, I have heard it said that even the Lone Ranger had Tonto!
  • Finally, a suitable time frame is required for any project task or deed to be successful.

So how does all this have anything to do with AA service?

Well, having the right attitude and support can allow anyone to take a service position.

There are many groups in the city that do not send an representative to Intergroup. In order for an AA group to have input into the local AA events in the Regina area, it is wise to have a representative of the group in attendance at Intergroup meetings.

In speaking with some AA members I have gotten the idea that many groups may erroneously feel they have Intergroup representation because they have a GSR rep attending GSR meetings. GSR meetings discuss AA business at the AREA 91(SK) level, and do not have any real input into many local AA events except if that event is an Area Conference or Gratitude night.

Intergroup is the local collective group conscience of Regina area AA groups, nothing more or less than that. Please ensure that your group has a rep in attendance.

Keep it Simple ?

Okay, that’s one of our fondest AA slogans!

So why then , if it is an ‘AA Slogan’, do we have so many complicated traditions and rules in AA? The organization that is supposedly so unorganized.

What is this ‘AA Intergroup’, is it a ‘governing body’ or a ‘collective group conscience’. Is it responsible ‘to the AA groups’ or ‘for the AA groups’? Is it the same as a GSR group? And who the heck pays for the AA office to stay open? The Government?

What are these Concepts of Service and what on God’s green earth is a DCM? Or a GSR?

Is there some sort of District Committee ? If so, what in heavens name do they do?

I thought AA was about staying sober and helping the next alcoholic to recover! So why do we need all this other stuff?

If you have these questions, stay tuned … Heart to Heart will try and simplify these issues over the next few months!

Area #91 (Sask) AA Archives Update

Let the banners fly and the bells ring out!! It's here!! It's here!!

Area #91 officially has an archive repository. After more than 25 years of ideas, suggestions, motions and debate, the Area #91 Saskatchewan general service assembly, approved a motion for a permanent home for archives.

The home will be located at 115b 3rd Avenue South, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan commencing January 01st 2001.

A lease will be signed concurrent with the term of the assembly. Every assembly will make a decision whether or not to renew the lease. The cost to the area will be $999.96 per year.

Now that the motion has passed and a lease signed, the real work can begin.

We still need more information on the beginnings of AA in our province. A good start would be with your home group. Who, what, when, where and how did it start?

Any old-timers with 30 or more years sobriety in your group?

History forms are available from your GSR or DCM. Fill them out and send them in, we would be delighted to hear from you.

A house warming/grand opening is in the works for February, the same weekend as the Saskatoon roundup. More details to follow.

The 55th anniversary of AA in Saskatchewan happens in November of 2001. The archives committee is going to help co-ordinate a celebration of this event. Again, more details to follow.

These are exciting times for AA in Saskatchewan!

Let's all work together to preserve the AA message and carry it to other alcoholics.

Like any other AA service, the primary purpose of those involved in archival work is to carry the message of AA.

Archives service is more than mere custodial activity; it is the means by which we collect, preserve and share the rich and meaningful heritage of our fellowship.

It is by the collection and sharing of these important historical elements that our collective gratitude for AA is deepened.( from the AA archives guidelines)

Yours in love and service, Maury F

Area #91 archives chairperson
